Dr Daniel Smyrek's particular expertise lies in the drafting of cross-border commercial contracts and in conducting complex commercial litigation and arbitration proceedings. Dr. Smyrek's regional focus is on France, the MENA region and the French-speaking countries of Africa. Dr. Smyrek was admitted to the German Bar in 2004 and to the French Avocat à la Cour in 2007. He is also accredited as an arbitrator at the CMAP in Paris.

Dr. Smyrek's clients include medium-sized companies from industry and commerce as well as various banks, which Dr. Smyrek assists in cross-border legal cases, often with reference to France, Africa and the Near and Middle East. 

Dr Smyrek is one of the first specialist lawyers for international business law in Germany and was for several years chairman of the examination committee for the award of the title "Specialist Lawyer for International Business Law" at the Stuttgart Bar Association. He is also certified as a French specialist lawyer for international law and EU law.

Dr. Smyrek is the author of numerous articles on international business law and regularly publishes blogs on Franco-German legal relations and the law of the Maghreb countries. He is also co-author of the business guides for Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia published by Germany Trade and Invest (GTAI). He frequently lectures on the legal framework in North Africa at chambers of commerce and industry.

Dr Smyrek studied Islamic Studies in Tübingen and Law in Trier, Aix-en-Provence and Tübingen and holds both German state law examinations as well as a French Maîtrise en droit. In 2005, he received his doctorate from the University of Tübingen with a dissertation in international law written in English, where he also worked academically in the chair of Prof. Dr. Martin Nettesheim.

In addition to his German mother tongue, Dr Smyrek is fluent in French and English. He also has a basic knowledge of High Arabic.

Before working as a lawyer, Dr Smyrek worked in the international legal department of the Landesbank Baden-Württemberg and at the German-Arab Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Cairo.

Dr. Smyrek is an honorary member of the board of the association Christ und Jurist. He is a member of the accreditation committee of the Mediation Centre of the German-French Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Paris. Dr Smyrek is also a member of the German-French Lawyers' Association, the Association for the Promotion of the German-French Institute in Ludwigsburg, the German-Israeli Lawyers' Association and the CDU.
